DOT Alcohol & Drug Testing Consortium Nationwide DOT & Non-DOT Testing

WE ARE HERE TO HELP

Thorough DOT drug testing stands as an integral component within every transportation company’s compliance regimen for DOT drug and alcohol regulations. It is a legal requirement for all drivers or employers of drivers holding a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to adhere to specific drug testing protocols established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The regulations stipulate the types of drugs drivers must be screened for, the frequency and timing of tests, approved facilities for conducting DOT-compliant drug tests, the essential elements of a trucking company’s Drug-Free Workplace program, and other pertinent aspects.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing

Before operating a vehicle requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), all owner-operators or personnel are obligated to undergo pre-employment drug testing and obtain negative results.

Post Accident

Following the nature of the accident and the injuries sustained by those involved, drivers may be required to undergo immediate drug and alcohol testing to ascertain individual responsibility.

Random Drug Testing

To maintain DOT compliance, both owner-operators and employees of transportation companies need to participate in a consortium pool and undergo random drug testing throughout the year.

Reasonable Suspicion

If an employer suspects that an employee might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while at work, the concerned employee may be requested to undergo a drug or alcohol test.

Return-To-Duty

Should a driver have a prior history of testing positive for drugs or alcohol, they must obtain a negative result on a “return-to-duty” drug test before resuming their workplace duties.

Follow-Up

Drivers who have completed the return-to-duty process, which includes passing a negative return-to-duty test, must undergo multiple tests throughout the following year.

What Happens After The Test?

Regardless of whether drug test results yield positive or negative outcomes, NCR Medical Lab ensures the utmost confidentiality, delivering results through appropriate channels to uphold discretion.

In the event of a positive result, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will reach out to the employee to investigate potential medical factors that could have influenced the test, such as the use of prescription medication. If no valid medical reason is identified, the employee should be suspended from safety-sensitive duties, and management should refer to the NCR Medical Lab Drug and Alcohol Policy program for guidance on subsequent actions.
